Sabbatical Sprint
Professor Claudia Haupt, a First Amendment scholar whose research is situated at the intersection of free speech, health and technology, spent her spring sabbatical at the Institute of European and Comparative Law at the University of Oxford. Her research project, “Talking Past Each Other Across the Pond: Why Discussions of Online Speech Regulation Between the US and Europe Fail and What We Can Do About It,” was the focus of several presentations Haupt gave in the EU, including at the European Law Institute’s Austrian Hub Evening Lecture at the University of Innsbruck in Austria; at Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland; for the Vienna Lectures on Comparative Constitutional Law and Theory at the University of Vienna in Austria; and two talks at Oxford, her home base.
“Academic and policy discussions concerning online speech regulation in the United States and Europe often get stuck around questions of free speech,” said Haupt. “This project aims to explore the existing constitutional frames around free speech values in the United States and Europe, uncovering the underlying assumptions that create roadblocks to a more fruitful policy discussion.”
Haupt also delivered talks on “Ethics and the Law and Regulation of Medical AI” for the Petrie-Flom Center at Harvard and “Generative AI and Medical Advice” for the Oxford Institute for Ethics in AI and Northeastern University London. These topics will be covered in her forthcoming book, Professional Speech (Cambridge University Press).

Professor David Simon, an expert in healthcare law, intellectual property, data governance and liability, has been selected as a 2025 Health Law Scholar by the Center for Health Law Studies at Saint Louis University School of Law and the American Society of Law, Medicine and Ethics.
Professor Sharmila Murthy, an expert on examining legal and policy barriers to achieving environmental justice, improving access to water and addressing climate change, has been named faculty co-director of the law school’s Center for Public Interest Advocacy and Collaboration.
