Burnham Receives Multiple Honors

Honors Roll
Professor Margaret Burnham was recently honored with the prestigious Equity Award by the National Consortium on Racial and Ethnic Fairness in the Courts at its annual conference, where she also served as a keynote speaker. Established in 2017, the Equity Award recognizes individuals who have made distinguished lifetime contributions or exceptional efforts to advance equal access and fair treatment in the court system. Burnham also received a Kaleidoscope Award for Literary Excellence from the CT Vivian Foundation. The award recognizes best-selling authors who have made exceptional contributions to the African American experience. Burnham is the author of the award-winning book By Hands Now Known: Jim Crow’s Legal Executioners.

In Chiles v. Salazar, the Supreme Court struck down Colorado’s ban on conversion therapy, ruling that the law unconstitutionally restricted a licensed counselor’s speech based on viewpoint. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson leaned heavily on Professor Claudia Haupt’s 2016 Yale Law Journal article.
Professor Kara Swanson spent the spring as a visiting faculty member at Auckland Law School in New Zealand.
